You say tomato . . .

These red fruit got a lot of bad press this summer, turning intestinal tracts inside out. But the locally grown variety from the farmers' market saw a booming business.

"Quilt-a-thon"
These "comfort quilts" were all made in about 4 hours by some very talented and caring volunteers. They were made as part of the "Service For Soldiers" Fair event held last Sunday at the Wollaston Congregational Church. These quilts will all be given to soldiers who are wheelchair bound. I like the pattern of the window light upon the quilts.

These women are walking the final few miles of the Susan G. Komen 3-day, 60 mile walk, raising money and awareness for fighting breast cancer. There are so many stories to be told here . . .

Medical Center
Quincy Medical Center is one of Quincy's finest institutional buildings. It was designed in 1936 by Paul and Carroll Coletti, Quincy architects, in a grand Classical Revival Style for a sum of $130,000. It is located on Whitwell Street and the area surrounding it is referred to as the Hospital Hill neighborhood. This community teaching hospital is associated with Boston Medical Center.

Bus Barn
Old Colony Street Railway built the first car barns here in 1901 to house the early street cars. In 1915, Bay State Railway bought the Old Colony line. Bay State Railway had the greatest street rail mileage of any company in the world at one time. They were in turn bought by Eastern Massachusetts Company in 1919 and then joined the MBTA in 1968.
A sad footnote today, a worker was killed in Quincy today when a leg of the "Goliath" gantry Crane gave way unexpectedly. The crane is being dismantled and moved to Romania for use in a shipyard there.

Golf anyone?
The Presidents Golf course is one of 3 golf courses located in Quincy. This par 70 course is over 100 years old and offers sweeping views of Boston. The wind, hilly terrain, and the influence of the Atlantic Ocean give the course a unique character that provides an excellent golfing experience.

Both Presidents, John Adams and John Quincy Adams, were lifetime members of the United First Parish Church shown here. Their tombs stand within a crypt in the church. I like returning to photograph this magnificent Greek Revival edifice, built of Quincy granite and designed by Alexander Parris.

August Theme Day . . . Metal
"Goliath", the largest gantry crane in North America is being dismantled at the Fore River Shipyard and moved to a shipyard in Romania this month. I thought that the 3,000 tons of metal pictured here would provide a good post particularly because Quincy is saying goodbye to this landmark that's more than 3 decades old.
There are 183 photoblogs participating in August theme day . . . hope you had fun checking them out.
