Central Conversion

The conversion of the old Central Middle School into 46 condo units is well underway.

Restoration Work

Restoration work  has begun in and around Quincy's old City Hall building.  Built in 1844, this is perhaps one of the oldest city halls in America. 

School Work In Progress

It is "back to school" for many students in Quincy today.  There's a lot more work to be done at the new Central Middle School before students and teachers can take possession of it.  I'm sure the wait will be well worth it in order to get the finishing work done properly and safely.  You don't want to cut any corners at this point of construction.

Corner Stone

The old high school didn't make the century mark, but came close.  It saw more than 80 graduating classes.  It looks as though the cornerstone is going to be saved . . . nice work. 

No Exit, No Return

In the days to come, I will be sharing some images from a photo shoot I did of the exterior of the old Quincy High School before demolition.  Construction and demolition sites have always fascinated me.  This is a shot of a front door and granite stairs that have been removed.  I wonder if the stone stairs will be reused somewhere . . .

New Construction

This is the new Central Middle School, view of the main entrance on St. Ann's Road.  The school is scheduled to open in September . . . looks like lots of work ahead.

Face-lift

The Coddington School, on the National Register of Historic Places, is undergoing a million dollar plus renovation for future use as school administration offices and other city services.  This colonial revival building was designed and built by Charles Brigham in 1909.  It's great to see these solid structures with so much character fixed and repurposed for many more years of service.  The old Quincy High School in the background is being readied for demolition.

Window Work

The shapes remind me of temples I have visited.  This will be Quincy's new "temple of knowledge."

Circular Elements

This view of the new Central Middle School is located on the corner of St. Ann's Road and Hancock Street.  The circular design element reminds me of this one at Quincy High School.  I wonder what it's function will be . . .

Wrapped In Color

This view of Quincy's new Central Middle School is taken from St. Ann's Road.  The other side has not been enclosed yet.  I can see some design similarities borrowed from Quincy High School.  I'll show you one tomorrow.

Framed In Steel

The new Central Middle School is beginning to take form.  This worker is framed in steel that has been erected on site.

Digging It

Soil is being moved around at the YMCA in preparation for their $25 million building project.

A Good Foundation

Concrete is being poured at the new site for Central Middle School.  We'll be seeing many more hardhats during the coming year of construction.  I plan to share the progress of this exciting construction at various stages of development.  Those high-rise apartments in the background are highpoint on Quarry Street.

Demolition Phase

This is what's left of St. Ann's Parish Center. I had many good times here swimming, bowling and watching my sons go through the cub scout ranks in Pack 21.

Clearing The Land

Demolition of St. Ann's School is well underway. The property is being cleared to make way for a new middle school. The school has been totally demolished. The former convent can be seen still standing in the background.

Rebuilding

One World Trade Center will stand tall at 1776 feet when completed in about a year, My thoughts on this anniversary are with all the people directly affected by this senseless tragedy.
