Stairway Challenge
The stairway to this house of worship is a challenge to climb. The large stone slabs have been removed, labeled and set aside in this early stage of the stair restoration project at Wollaston Congregational Church. The project was made possible through a city preservation grant.

"Watchfulness"
This rooster weathervane made by Charles Cushing has been perched atop the steeple at Wollaston Congregational Church for the last century. The cock has been used as a symbolic feature of Christian architecture throughout the Christian era; New England made liberal use of them.

The Hills Were Alive . . .
The sounds of Handel and Bach were heard Sunday, on Wollaston Hill, at a special Christmas concert called "Music On The Hill" held at the Wollaston Congregational Church. The icy conditions outside melted to the soothing sounds of chamber music inside.

Grey & Green
I really like the dramatic look of the clouds over The United First Parish Church (Church of the Presidents) in Quincy Center. Happy Skywatch Friday!

Travel Tuesday: Prague, Czech Republic
St. Vitus Cathedral, founded in 1344, is the seat of the Archbishop of Prague and is the largest, most important Roman Catholic church in the Czech Republic. It is located within the walls of Prague Castle and a "must see" if you visit this area. This medieval Gothic marvel not only contains the tombs of many Bohemian kings and Holy Roman Emperors but the verticality and stained glass work must be seen and experienced.

United First Parish Church
The bell tower of this National Historic Landmark in Quincy Center was recently restored. This church building is considered to be one of the finest standing Greek Revival church buildings in New England. It was designed by noted architect Alexander Parris, who also designed Quincy Market in nearby Boston. Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams are buried here with their wives. This magnificent building was made of Quincy granite and completed in 1828.
I also included a little spring green for "Earth Day". Go outside and enjoy!

"Upon This Rock..."

Built in 1844, from great blocks of Quincy granite, is the former Church of Saints Peter & Paul in South Boston. Gridley J.F. Bryant, son of the famed railroad pioneer, was the architect on this Gothic revival church. This was the first Roman Catholic Church in South Boston; it was closed in 1995, and turned into condos.
