Thursday is "This Old House" Day

Incredible clouds command attention at dusk over Ruth Gordon's girlhood home on Winthrop Ave. Thirty years ago today, Quincy named an amphitheater after it's award-winning star.

Thursday is "This Old House" Day

This American Foursquare home, located at 60 Albion Road in North Quincy, was built in 1914.  The granite foundation gives it the "Quincy" touch.

Thursday is "This Old House Day"

Today's 1900's era house is showing off it's "big heart" in the winter wonderland setting.  You can see the original post of this old house HERE.

Thursday is "This Old House" Day

This brick home, located at 72 Glendale Rd., was built in 1940.  There are only a small number of brick homes in the city.

Thursday Is "This Old House" Day

This well-cared-for, 1900, single family house at 118 Merrymount Road has a couple of nice porches.

Thursday is "ThisOld House" Day

This house on Highland Avenue with the inviting entrance, has undergone some renovations over the last few years.  The city records indicate that it was built in 1920.

Thursday is "This Old House" Day

This 1900 colonial revival at 38 Bennington Street in South Quincy was home to granite workers when it was first built.  Besides the front porch, I like the gambrel roof lines and the shingling details.

Thursday is "This Old House" Day

This 1887 classic single-family residence, with a fantastic wrap-around-porch,  is located at 87 Grand View Avenue.  It sold last January for $350,000.  Workers have been very busy giving it a complete makeover to ready it for a "flip."  After getting much needed TLC, it is on the market today for $799,000.  Click HERE to see the before ... you'll barely recognize it.

Travel Tuesday: Victoria-by-the-Sea, PEI Canada

This picturesque village by-the-sea is located along the southern shore of Prince Edward Island. The sky-blue house in the field of Queen Anne's Lace caught my eye.  Prince Edward Island is a beautiful part of the world!

Thursday is "This Old House" Day

This multiple unit residence, located at 12 Muirhead Street, was built in 1895 (as you can see carved into the Quincy granite foundation).  Satellite dishes and air conditioning units spoil the outside aesthetic of older homes.

This 1895 beauty, located at 56 Butler Road, has an inviting porch waiting for some good summer reads.

Thursday is "This Old House" Day

This multi-family house, located at 24 Merrymount Road, was built in 1930.  My guess is that it was a single family home when first built.  This house recently sold for $554,000 and borders Butler's Pond.

Thursday is "This Old House" Day

The Josiah Quincy House, located on Muirhead Street, was built in 1770, by Revolutionary War soldier Col. Josiah Quincy I.  The Quincy family was a prominent American political family from mid-17th century to early 20th century and related to the Adams family through Abigail Adams. Our city gets it's name from this family.  The house belongs to Historic New England and you can read more about it here.  Restoration and preservation work are ongoing.  Tours are available throughout the summer on the first Saturday of each month.  You must don blue surgical booties to help preserve the newly restored floor canvases.

Thursday is "This Old House" Day

Today's house located at 22 Merrymount Road, has a very unusual number of window panes.  I'm glad I don't have to clean them!  This house is scheduled to be demolished soon to make way for a parking lot.  I couldn't find any public records to confirm the age of the house.  My guess is early 1900s.

Thursday is "This Old House" Day

This 11 room Queen Anne on Lincoln Ave. was sold last October and is slowly being renovated.  What a great porch to hang out on.  I wonder if the new owners will put back the balustrades on the second level above the wrap-around porch.  Those big square windows are early picture windows.

Thursday is "This Old House" Day

This 1910 house at 99 South Central is sitting pretty in its spring setting.  I like the Quincy granite wall and walkway just visible in the foreground.

Thursday is "This Old House" Day

The forsythia in the foreground helps bring the eye to the yellow painted Beale-Rice House in the background at 181 Adams Street.  This grand Federal style house built in 1792, is set on one of Quincy's few remaining country settings.  It is owned by all of us (USA) and is part of the Adams National Historic Site.

Thursday is "This Old House" Day

This palatial home is located at 205 Adams Street, two doors away from the Adams Mansion.  This stately residence was built in 1941.  You have to cross Furnace Brook to get to it.

Thursday is "This Old House" Day

This 1890 house on Taylor Street has a wonderful wrap-around porch to enjoy, come spring.  Spring is coming; isn't it?

Summer Attraction

This tiger swallowtail butterfly was a delight to see pollinating the phlox bed along my driveway.
