Rainbow Swash

Corita Kent's artwork on the 140' LNG tank across Dorchester Bay from Quincy, is the largest copyrighted artwork in the world.  I posted a fun reflection of the rainbow swash yesterday.

"Atlas Of Independence"

Dedicated in 2001, this life-size bronze statue of John Adams designed by sculptor Lloyd Lillie, is located at City Hall Plaza which is in full bloom this spring weekend. Occasionally, when Boston's sports teams are vying for a championship, you will see John sporting the team's colors.

John Adams was a short man, but long on opinions and always thinking for himself. This earned him the nickname "Atlas of Independence."

Handiwork

This is one of two massive 20 foot “sculptures” in the shape of large hands signifying the legacy of Hands-on learning on Thompson Island. The hands were cleverly constructed by island youth ambassadors and are formed from frames built of medium-sized tree branches and creatively woven with the invasive species found on the island: Oriental Bittersweet and Phragmites. The hands can be seen from many points around Boston Harbor.

Mother & Child

This primitive painting was captured on a basement window of St. Ann's School. Update 12/22/11: this window disappeared when the school was demolished and the land cleared to make way for a new Central Middle School. I do not know whether any effort was made to preserve the window or auction it off.

Face Carved In Stone

This Quincy style jack-o-lantern was carved from a 6,000 pound block of granite by local artist, Ed Monti. The 83-year-old granite sculptor surprised the city by placing this grinning piece onto city hall plaza for all to enjoy . . . and the best part is . . . it won't rot. Happy Halloween!

There is a fascinating conversation going on at one of the jewelry tables at last weekend's arts festival.

Books & Art

Local artists are able to share their work in the exhibit space at the Thomas Crane Library. If you enlarge this you'll see the book stacks reflected in this watercolor from last months show.

Does your library exhibit local artists' work?

1776

The musical, 1776, was recently performed on the grass at the Adams National Historical Park. A player from the Randolph Theater Company is portraying John Adams seen here. 1776 relates the story of the contentious debate among our nation's founding fathers at the Second Continental Congress. This debate culminated in the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

Do you have any free "arts in the park" type events in your town during the summer months?

Opening Day in Wing A

The Science, Math, Technology Center opens to students at Quincy High School today. This is a very exciting accomplishment for our city and puts the new high school building project at 36% completion. We will visit the state of the art interior as soon as I get inside to document it. (I can't wait for the dirty snow to go away.)

More 02170

Above the Superintendent's doorway of the Wollaston Post Office is a beautiful piece of Massachusetts Post Office New Deal Artwork. This wood relief entitled "Welder" was created by George Katina in 1942. Many welders were employed at The Shipyard in Quincy over the years, so this is a wonderful piece of public art.

Summer Attraction

This tiger swallowtail butterfly was a delight to see pollinating the phlox bed along my driveway.
