Alterations???
This storefront does not lend a prosperous look to downtown Wollaston and has looked like this for a many years. At the very least, it could use some alterations to those windows. I am sure some local artists could add interesting murals to the windows to make it a little more welcoming to the community. Here is a picture of this building from 6 years ago. I wonder why this has been vacant for so long?

Fleeting Clouds
The Intercontinental Hotel in Boston has an ever-changing glass surface that is fun to photograph.

Johnny Depp Was Here
This apartment building at 6 Gilson Road was recently turned into Whitey Bulger's 16-year hideaway in Southern California for the film, "Black Mass," which will be released in 2015. Johnny Depp stars as Whitey Bulger, the Boston-Irish crime boss and leader of the Winter Hill gang. (The apartment building was built in 1963, for my Thursday Old House followers.)

Travel Tuesday: Oahu, Hawaii
"With a pink hotel, a boutique, and a swinging hot spot" are lyrics from the song, "Big Yellow Taxi" that singer, songwriter, Joni Mitchell recorded in 1970. Thanks to QDP follower, Andy, for reminding me last Thursday of this great song. I researched the lyrics and learned that the "pink hotel" in
this song is most likely the Royal Hawaiian in Honolulu. The romantic
and legendary "Pink Palace", was built in 1927 is the landmark hotel on
Waikiki Beach. I captured this picture but didn't realize it's history and connection to Joni's hit song.

Travel Tuesday: Springfield, Massachusetts
The U.S. Federal Courthouse in Springfield, Massachusetts, designed by the renowned Moshe Safdie, was completed in 2008 for $53 million dollars. I would like to photograph this modern ediface at dusk.

Flag & Facade Remain
The beautiful but charred neoclassical facade of the Quincy Masonic Temple is all that remains after a multiple-alarm fire gutted it on Monday. It was built in 1926, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. So many good memories were made here: my own go back to meeting Santa at White Brothers Milk Company Christmas parties that were held here. I also attended DeMolay installations here for my sons, the popular dinner theater events and the antique shows. The interior was as amazing as the exterior. To see previous QDP posts of the Masonic Temple, please click HERE, HERE, and HERE.

Thursday is "This Old Building" Day
Today I am sharing a building facade from "Granite Town" also known at St. George in New Brunswick, Canada. I thought it appropriate seeing as we call ourselves "Granite City."
St. George's granite industry began in 1862, (later than Quincy's). "St. George red and black" was quarried and transformed in their local sheds for more than 60 years. It was used in buildings and cemeteries across North America.
St. George supplied columns and stone for the Roman Catholic Cathedral in Boston as well as the American Museum of Natural History in New York and Ottawa's Parliament Building, to name a few.

Travel Tuesday: Boston
I didn't travel very far for today's picture of Boston's InterContinental Hotel on Atlantic Avenue. This is a fun building to photograph with so many lines and angles; I like how it looks in monochrome.

In Between Land & Sky
This view of State Street office building in North Quincy, is taken from across the Neponset River at Pope Paul Park. I think Frank Lloyd Wright would like this setting.

Outdoor Venue, 2012
Bank of America Pavilion is one of Boston's favorite summertime theater venues, seating 5,000 people and located along Boston's waterfront. I will be one of the proud parents attending my son's graduation ceremony here today and the weather forecast looks delightful for the event.
The whole waterfront area in South Boston is undergoing transformation with development of a convention center, trade center, hotels, restaurants, bars, museums, piers, condos, walkways and more. You wouldn't know we were in a recession by seeing all the commerce in the area.

Out With The Bad . . .
Happy Monochrome Monday! On the highway heading north towards downtown Boston is this very industrial looking building. It is actually the ventilation system controlling the air quality for 3.6 miles of tunnels in Boston.

"Upon This Rock..."

Built in 1844, from great blocks of Quincy granite, is the former Church of Saints Peter & Paul in South Boston. Gridley J.F. Bryant, son of the famed railroad pioneer, was the architect on this Gothic revival church. This was the first Roman Catholic Church in South Boston; it was closed in 1995, and turned into condos.
