Quincy Firsts?

Quincy's School Committee race was uncontested until candidate and former School Committee woman, Emily Lebo, entered the race as a write-in candidate.  She enters the race with energy, expertise, and past school committee experience that she can offer the citizens of Quincy.  If she is successful in her bid, she will become Quincy's first elected write-in candidate!  On the other hand, if one of her opponents, James Vincent DeAmicis, is successful in his bid, he will be the youngest elected city official at age 19.  It's a good thing he isn't a write-in candidate - he has a long name! Election Day is next Tuesday, November 3rd.  Go vote!

Chapter 89; Section 11

"When traffic control signals are not in place or not in operation the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right of way, slowing down or stopping if need be so to yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk ...Whoever violates any provision of this section shall be punished by a fine of not more than $200."

The "Big" Event Is Coming!

Plans are being made, money is being spent and escorts are being sought.  Prom season is upon us and that can be a crazy time for many families.

"Shopperstown USA" Resurfaces

This Touraine sign saw the light of day once again after the demolition of the Quincy Fair Mall. Touraine's, opened for business in 1949 and sold woman's apparel at its Hancock Street location for about 30 years until malls lured shoppers away from the city.

I wonder if the Historical Society will procure and preserve this piece of Quincy's history.

Follow The Signs

Somehow the signs led me back to Quincy. I hope you have all been well while I was meandering around New England. I will resume regular posting tomorrow.

This is a grab shot of a "Quincy" directional sign off the Mass. Turnpike highway heading south out of Boston. Can you guess what day of the week this was?

It's a bit nippy to worry about anyone taking a dip here at Black's Creek. Santa and helpers are expected to land by parachute later today at the other end of this estuary for a brief visit. Hopefully they don't get blown off course.

Roxie's is a one of a kind meat market that has been a fixture on the Southern Artery since 1957. I like the guy that stands in the back of the store with a sharpie making markdowns but the store odor is more than I can bare.

I've been observing this vintage sign in different lighting situations and I think the evening sky shows it off the best. If you click and enlarge it you'll notice a crane sticking our behind the left sign post. That is the building site of the new Quincy High School.

Massage anyone?

Massage parlors seem to be springing up around town. This neon sign was taken in the window of a new massage parlor on Newport Avenue near the Wollaston Train station. It could be a handy location for all those commuters who had to stand up for their trip home from Boston . . . see "SRO" post here.

This wonderful sign belongs to Quincy Locksmith in Wollaston. This is where I get my 100+ year old broken door mechanisms fixed. Most people lock their doors around here . . . do you?

Why do so many people ignore these signs??? This parker at Marina Bay must have one of the "special "not me" parking permits or be in need of an eyeware upgrade.

This sign is displayed outside a new "watering hole" at Marina Bay. Do you think bathing suits are allowed? This is my choice for July's Theme Day.

"The Fat Cat" Moves In

How fat is the cat you ask? I read that owner Neil Kiley's grey cat weighs in at 32 pounds. Now that is one well fed cat and "The Fat Cat" is one of Quincy's newest eating establishments in the historic center district. This view of Chestnut Street is what remains of five town houses built by William Lyman Faxon in 1874. Do you like Sully's vintage red sign?
