A Moment to Pause and Remember . . .

Memorial Day is the federal holiday set aside each May to remember all the armed forces men and women who died while serving our country.  The Badger family was a very prominent Quincy family involved in the granite industry.  In August of 1862, Ezra Badger enlisted in the Civil war as a soldier in company D, 39th Massachusetts infantry regiment.  He was 64 years old!   At enlistment, he held the rank of wagoner, and mustered out 2 months later. 

Blazing Maple

Some of the most beautiful fall foliage can be seen in local cemeteries like this colorful maple in Mount Wollaston Cemetery.

Justice, Honor, Strength

This bronze relief on a monument to the International Hod Carriers Labor Union (Laborers International Union), is located in Mount Wollaston Cemetery and seems like a fitting post for acknowledging this national holiday.

I spotted this beautiful stone detail on a gravestone at Mt. Wollaston Cemetery.  Some of the stonework in Quincy's cemeteries is amazing.

These Leaves Left

Purple Majesty

The only elk I have seen in Quincy is this elk statue for members of the Elks organization that are buried here at Mt. Wollaston cemetery.

Dressed & Undressed

Cemeteries are a great place for viewing the shapes and colors of trees in a city. I liked the contrast of the 2 trees here -- one in full fall dress and the tree beside it that has shed all its leaves.

Forever Leaves

These beautifully rendered leaves caught my eye on the doors to a mausoleum at Mt. Wollaston cemetery. I hope to do lots of leaf peeping in the next week.

This tree trunk appears to be caught in a dance moving among the rows of graves at Mt. Wollaston Cemetery.

Mt. Wollaston Cemetery is a perfect place to see some of Quincy's best autumn tree specimens. The shape and varied colors caught my eye.
