Thursday is "This Old House" Day

President John Adams was born in 1735 and raised in this weathered New England "salt box" farmhouse on Franklin Street. He spent his young married life here with his wife, Abigail. This modest house also served as John Adam's law office, where along with Samuel Adams and James Bowdoin, he wrote the Massachusetts Constitution on which the U.S. Constitution was modeled.

Adams Birthplace - Another View

Another view of John Adams' Birthplace. In the background you can see the birthplace of John Quincy Adams. This style house is what is known as a New England Saltbox. If you are interested, more information on this style can be found here.

Adams Birthplace
Built in 1650 and modified in 1720, the John Adams birthplace was renovated over a six year period in the 1980s.The most interesting room in the house is Adams' old law office, in which he, John Bowdoin, and Samuel Adams drafted the Massachusetts State Constitution which is still in use today and greatly influenced the development of the United States Constitution.
Its clapboards remain unpainted as research by the National Park Service indicates that the house was unpainted when John and Abigail last lived in it.
