Marina Bay

Marina Bay sits on Dorchester Bay on Boston Harbor and provides nice views of the Boston skyline. It boasts many fine restaurants, nightclubs, shops, condos, apartments, and a full service marina. According to the city of Quincy's website it is the largest full service marina in the northeastern United States, housing 685 boat slips, "a Boatworks with the capability to repair and refurbish both power and sailboats, a Yacht Broker, a 35-ton travelift for hauling and launching boats, and a fully equipped marina, complete with showers and laundry. On the boardwalk is a magnificent clocktower, a memorial to Quincy's veterans who died in Vietnam."

Marina Bay has quite a history of shipbuilding and aviation. During World War I the area was occupied by the Victory Shipyard, a satellite of the Fore River Shipyard. The Victory Shipyard completed a vessel in 45 days and set a world record for fastest construction of a ship. Marina Bay is also the site of the old Squantum Naval Air Station, the first Reserve Naval Air Station in the country, established in 1941. It was the site of air shows as early as 1910 and hosted several international air shows. These air shows featured many of the pioneers of early aviation, such as
Harriet Quimby
, Amelia Earhart, and Englishman Claude Grahame-White.

I learned how to drive on the old abandoned runways of the former Squantum air base.

Summer Attraction

This tiger swallowtail butterfly was a delight to see pollinating the phlox bed along my driveway.
