Thursday is "This Old House Day"

One of the oldest houses on Wollaston Hill, number 174 Warren Avenue also has one of the most spacious plots. You saw its adjoining basketball court this past Monday. This single residence was built in the 1870s in the Italianate style and has gone through many additions and changes over the years. It is a successful and attractive "modernization" of a 19th century residence and is the home of one of Quincy's favorite benefactors.

What a large house for the 1870s! The first owners must have had a large family or have done a lot of entertaining to need that much space. Was it a single family dwelling from the beginning?

We build big houses now because we have so much "stuff" but that wasn't true of most people in the 19th century.

Summer Attraction

This tiger swallowtail butterfly was a delight to see pollinating the phlox bed along my driveway.
