Old Colony Street Railway built the first car barns here in 1901 to house the early street cars. In 1915, Bay State Railway bought the Old Colony line. Bay State Railway had the greatest street rail mileage of any company in the world at one time. They were in turn bought by Eastern Massachusetts Company in 1919 and then joined the MBTA in 1968.
A sad footnote today, a worker was killed in Quincy today when a leg of the "Goliath" gantry Crane gave way unexpectedly. The crane is being dismantled and moved to Romania for use in a shipyard there.
