Waiting For Spring

I couldn't help but notice the tulip banner juxtaposed with the snowy scene at the corner of Hancock and Beale Streets in Wollaston, the former site of Wollaston's Five and Dime store.

The spring is coming. The temperature rises and there are a lot of snowdrops in the grass :)

That shoveled walk looks a bit treacherous.

Interesting site. Do you know if the 5&10 had a lunch counter?

How nostalgic for me! I walked to the Wollaston Five and Ten often as a child in the 1950's. I bought my pet turtle there, my plastic horse statues, and my fingerpaints. Mom shopped there, along with all the other shops on the block. I do not remember it having a lunch counter. Possibly it did in the section that had the Hancock St. entrance. My memory is fuzzy. I always entered from Beale Street, just blocks from my home. I remember the creaky wooden floors and the wooden display tables divided into compartments with interesting, inexpensive items in each one. The store was still open in the 1960's, as I remember buying my cosmetics there as a young teen. When did it close? And whatever happened to the Brigham's Ice Cream Parlor on the block? And the Fish Market?

They are a little early with that banner.

Now that IS hopeful! I'm in Maryland, and this week I saw some crocus leaves poking out of the snow! Won't be long now!

I can't believe this! I'm English and I live in England now but a decade ago, I lived just down the road from the building in your pic and one day there was an unbelievably awful storm and I had to run in and shelter with my then-boyfriend. You've even got a picture of the fire station that used to keep me awake at night. Total trip down memory lane.

Thank you all for visiting and leaving your comments. Your comments provide incentive for me to keep doing this (565 days and counting!)
To further answer questions about the Five and Dime . . . this one in Wollaston definitely did not have a lunch counter. You could go to Brighams for lunch or just grab a great hot fudge sundae there;-) Yes, Brighams is still there in all its vintage glory. I just took some pictures in there last weekend and will be posting them soon. Beale Street Fish Market sadly went out of business a few years ago. The store is still vacant where it operated.

Summer Attraction

This tiger swallowtail butterfly was a delight to see pollinating the phlox bed along my driveway.
