Choosing sides

Beach volleyball is a great sport and Wollaston Beach is a great place to practice it. I liked the placement of all the elements in this summer scene. You can see the peninsula of Squantum in the background.

Always wondered where Squantum was. Funny word...native American origin? Is there a story here?

Looks as if they're having a pre-game conference. Nice shot.

Birdman- you are correct about Squantum being of native American origin (Algonquian) and yes there is a story. The Algonquian's name for the area was Musquantum; by 1630 the name had come to mean much or all of the peninsula. According to legend, it was named after two semi-divine personages - the male Musquot and his squaw Squanit. These Beings were believed to have greeted the people and gave them survival skills.

It is from this that the name Squantum derived soon after the arrival of the English settlers.

Nice to get the etymological background to the name. It's amazing how the greens on the net have stood out, almost like neon.

Yes, this is nicely done, Slim. And the colors are superb!

Summer Attraction

This tiger swallowtail butterfly was a delight to see pollinating the phlox bed along my driveway.
