I've got a picture almost identical to that that I took while out hiking around a couple of weeks ago! We had a wasp in the house last night and my son and I were chasing it around with fly swatters. My husband wanted to tape us because we looked crazy,lol.
I do not know where the hornets go in the winter. I just know you got a super shot of their nest. Well done.

Beautiful shot! It took a whole summer to build that fantastic nest! Unfortunately most wasps die during the winter. Only the queen and a few of her helpers manage to survive in some tree bark or something. Then in the spring the whole thing starts all over again.
