Vacancy

Skywatching can be rewarding. When the foliage falls, summer hideouts reveal themselves like this hornets' nest. Where do hornets go in winter?

Happy Skywatch Friday. Click here for other sky pictures from around the world.

I've got a picture almost identical to that that I took while out hiking around a couple of weeks ago! We had a wasp in the house last night and my son and I were chasing it around with fly swatters. My husband wanted to tape us because we looked crazy, lol.

I do not know where the hornets go in the winter. I just know you got a super shot of their nest. Well done.

What a great view of the sky. I am glad to see the hornets gone.

Beautiful shot! It took a whole summer to build that fantastic nest! Unfortunately most wasps die during the winter. Only the queen and a few of her helpers manage to survive in some tree bark or something. Then in the spring the whole thing starts all over again.

Thank you for your informative comment, Hetty. I guess it's all about "the queen".

Terrific shot of some amazing architecture. It's always a surprise to see what hides behind summer's leaves.

Summer Attraction

This tiger swallowtail butterfly was a delight to see pollinating the phlox bed along my driveway.
